This story is about Emma Adler —a girl considered a troublemaker, who isn't afraid of anything, doesn't have any friends, and thinks she is too hard to love. However, when she meets a shy boy —Myles Green, who is afraid of almost everything, doesn't talk much, and is her new neighbor, Emma is determined to make him her friend. Emma and Myles have bonded really well over the years and are inseparable until Myles went to high school, and Emma is still in middle school (this is what she thinks). They start to drift apart slowly, and one incident makes them separate for three years. In these three years, Myles started hating Emma. And, Emma let him.
